LINDA's SPECIAL STORY!!

Never say die.  This was drilled into my head by a coach I had years ago and something I have screamed many times from the bleachers at my own children whenever they were losing a game.  Don't give up. Ever.  The reason we play THE game, ANY game, isthe unpredictability of it.  You won't know the outcome until the buzzer sounds. 

A week prior to the start of my 9 Week Challenge, I found myself on the phone with my neurologist.  I had spent the past year caring for my ill father.  After putting him to rest, I was left physically, emotionally, and mentally spent and symptons of my relapsing-remiting multiple sclerosis had kicked in full force.  I felt like I was going to die and I looked even worse.

The doctors had been telling me for years I needed to be exercising.  MS is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system.  Id you don't use your muscles, they will begin to atrophy.  One othe most difficult things to manage with MS is the extreme exhaustion.  It's difficult to articulate how this feels.  But imagine swimming through syrup dragging an elephant behind you.  I never felt like exercising.  There wre many days, I didn't feel like getting out of bed.  I was constantly tired and physically weak. 

I discussed my options with my doctor, none of which I liked.  But starting another medication seemed the lesser of two evils when the alternative could mean spending time in the hospital.  So I started popping yet another pill. 

It had become crystal clear to me now I needed to make some serious changes or I could become disabled in teh very near future.  I contacted Sandy, one fo the owners of GIM, and mailed my check.

I'm not going to sugar coat any of this.  It was difficult for me in the beginning.  I hadn't done anything remotely physcial since my diagnosis in 2001.  But each week, I grew a little stronger making the workouts very manageable.  And after the inital shock to my dormant system, the workouts were enjoyable.  Now, I would say my workouts have become addictive.

I didn't join this program to lose weight and winning the challenge wasn't even a passing thought.  I wanted to be healhty.  I needed to be healthy.  The competition aspect of the challenge did become a motivating force for me as I grew stronger.  The 33 pounds I shed, although an awesome side effect, doesn't compare to the fact that I can now do military style push-ups without wanting to cry!

It took some serious dedication.  I asked questions, followed the advice of my instructors and coach, and grew to love the food plan.  For me, spending one mere hour a day working on my health was, and is, worth every drop of sweat.  When the buzzer sounded at the end of my "9 week game", I had won far morethan I could have ever hoped.  Confidence in my ability to change the outcome of my health has been my biggest reward.  I continue to take a weekly injection to slow progression of my MS.  But...my symptons have vanished, as has the need to take any additional medications. 

I like to think I am the epitome of, "Never Say Die."
